About Our Society
Preserving Heritage Valley since 1962
The Heritage Valley Historical Society was founded in 1962 by a small group of residents who recognized the importance of preserving the history and heritage of Heritage Valley and Heritage County, Ohio.
What began as informal meetings in the Heritage Valley Public Library has grown into a thriving organization of 250 members dedicated to genealogical research, historical preservation, and community education.
What We Do
- Library & Archives — We maintain a research library of books, maps, periodicals, and vertical files covering Heritage County history and genealogy. Open Library hours are the first and third Saturdays of each month.
- Records Indexing — Our volunteers have indexed over 4,200 cemetery inscriptions and thousands of vital, land, and court records, all searchable through our website.
- Monthly Programs — Guest speakers, workshops, and field trips throughout the year, open to members and the public.
- Publications — The Heritage Valley Quarterly newsletter, published continuously since 1975, plus special publications on county history and genealogy.
- Preservation — Cemetery restoration, historical marker dedications, and partnerships with local archives to digitize fragile records.
Leadership
The society is governed by an elected board of directors and led by dedicated volunteers who serve as officers, committee chairs, and project coordinators. We welcome new volunteers at every level of experience.
